Abstract

The rises of environmental degradation problems, fossil fuels depletion, and energy security have ensured a surge of interest in biomass as a sustainable power source. Biomass is a form of organic material obtained out of the plants and animals and has huge energy producing connotations of thermochemical and biochemical ways. This review covers in details the most significant ways of converting biomass, which are combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, anaerobic digestion and fermentation. It also points out the physicochemical as well as the fuel characteristics of biomass that acts on its performance and the appropriateness in energy applications. In addition, the review assesses energy situation on the global scene and how to switch to renewable system of energy where biomass can help. This paper offers information on how to optimize the use of biomass to obtain clean and efficient energy through a combination of the relative components proportions and energy attributes of various biomass sources.
