Abstract

Urban open spaces (UOSs) are publicly accessible areas within urban settings designed for human interaction and recreation, encompassing parks, playgrounds, and gardens. UOSs are reserved for green spaces and other open spaces whereas areas related to the urban or built environment, including natural spaces such as valleys running through an urban area. UOSs are increasingly recognized for their multifaceted role in enhancing safety, community well-being, and disaster resilience. The aim of this paper is to determine the significance of UOSs from the safety perspectives. A literature review was conducted to gather relevant information. In terms of planning of UOSs, collaboration between local authorities and community including broader urban planning process and wider green infrastructure network is crucial. To ensure safety in public spaces, the important factors are: UOSs planning and managing urban settlements; core principles for achieving safety in public spaces; good maintenance, higher illumination and lighting sources, and take into account about the crime-related perceived safety; careful planning of UOSs as assembly areas for emergency evacuation; risk assessment; and fulfils legal and other requirements. Meanwhile, for safe evacuation and rescue, rescue facilities, rescue routes, evacuation routes and shelters are provided in UOSs. In conclusion, the significance of UOSs from safety perspectives is vital.
